ASEAN and regional integration

H2 Geography - syllabus 9173, 2027

What this lesson teaches

  • I can compare how ASEAN, the WTO and the World Bank influence TNCs and states.

Syllabus 9173, Topic 1.2, 3. Relative Influence of Actors in Shaping the Global Economy. Can multilateral institutions influence economic activities?

Make a guess

ASEAN members agree to cut tariffs on most goods traded between them. What can a TNC now do more easily?

  1. Spread production stages across member countries.
  2. Ignore national rules in the region.
  3. Nothing, because agreements have no effect on firms.
  4. Hire any worker for any job in any country.
Show the answer

Spread production stages across member countries.

Lower barriers and simpler customs cut the cost and delay of moving parts between countries, so firms can split production across the region.

ASEAN cooperation can make regional trade and production easier, but agreed goals and real results are not the same.

A multilateral institution is set up by several states to pursue shared goals. ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, supports regional cooperation, including economic integration. Each government keeps its own powers and priorities.

Lower trade barriers and simpler customs cut the cost and delay of moving parts between countries. So a TNC can spread production stages across the region. A bigger connected market can also attract investment. Small firms benefit only if they can meet standards and afford transport.

Agreements on recognising qualifications make skills easier to compare across countries. But not every worker can take any job anywhere. National licensing and immigration rules still apply.

ASEAN's influence depends on member states actually carrying out agreements. Differences in capacity, infrastructure and national interests can leave barriers in place. Gains may go mostly to places that are already well connected. So check actual cost savings, usable market access and where investment goes, rather than assuming a declared regional goal has been achieved.

Multilateral institution
Set up by several states for shared goals.
ASEAN
Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Limits
National rules and uneven implementation remain.

Step by step

Name the agreement

Trade, investment or qualifications?

Explain the firm's response

How lower costs change location or sourcing.

Check implementation

Which national rules or gaps remain?

Real examples to use

ASEAN Economic Community, 2015

ASEAN members removed tariffs on most goods traded between them, aiming for a single market and production base.

RCEP

Signed in 2020 by ASEAN and five partners, including China and Japan, it is one of the world's largest trade agreements.

Worked example: A regional parts network

A firm makes a part in one ASEAN country and assembles products in another. Faster customs cut waiting and storage costs. But poor roads or strict standards may still keep small suppliers out.

    Watch out for this

Regional integration removes every border rule.

It reduces some barriers. National rules still matter.

    Check your understanding

An ASEAN framework makes qualifications easier to compare. What can we conclude?

    1. Goods can move more easily, but not people.
    2. Licensing and immigration rules disappear for skilled workers.
    3. One barrier to skilled workers moving may be lower.
    Show the answer

One barrier to skilled workers moving may be lower.

Yes. Licensing and immigration rules still apply.
