How can we respond to the cultural impacts of globalisation?
G3 Social Studies - syllabus K336 (Social Studies component), 2027
How global connections spread culture, make cultures more alike or blend them, and how people and countries respond.
- Spread of culture
Global connections carry music, films, food, fashion and ideas to people far from where they began.
- Cultural homogenisation
Cultural homogenisation is when cultures around the world become more alike, sharing the same products and tastes.
- Cultural hybridisation
Cultural hybridisation is when elements of different cultures mix to create something new.
- Dilution of culture
Cultural dilution is when a culture's practices, knowledge or meaning weaken because fewer people learn and pass them on.
- Individual responses
People can accept, adapt or reject different parts of foreign culture while keeping the traditions they value.
- Country responses
Countries can welcome foreign culture, support local culture and restrict some content, all at the same time.
- Briefing: mega events
Global concerts and sports events bring visitors and attention, but they cost money and raise questions about who benefits.
- Put it together: What changed in the workshop?
A local textile workshop encounters jacket designs through overseas shopping apps. It also makes embroidered garments and teaches the craft. Compare three possible outcomes after the overseas styles arrive.

Sources and context
Background reading for this chapter.
- Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism: Hallyu survey results, 8 April 2025
The sample consists of prior content users, not the world's population. Liking content does not prove acceptance of every value or a decline in respondents' local practices.
- National Environment Agency and partners: Hawker culture inscription, 16 December 2020
Inscription does not guarantee that every skill will survive or establish exclusive ownership of the food. Continued practice and teaching still matter.
- Ministry of Home Affairs statement on the Watain concert, 1 April 2019
This is the government's account of its reasoning, not proof that cancellation prevented harm. It does not establish a ban on all foreign music or all private listening.
- Al Jazeera, 5 March 2024
The grant's size was not made public, so its value for money cannot be fully judged.
