The dominoes stopped at Indochina. Non-communist ASEAN states grew stronger instead.
Vietnam weakened American power and confidence, encouraged detente and triangular diplomacy, and left a communist Vietnam aligned with Moscow.
The war damaged the USA. Around 58,000 Americans died, and the war divided American society and weakened the economy. The "Vietnam syndrome" made Americans wary of new foreign wars for years.
It changed superpower relations. To get out of Vietnam and gain leverage over Moscow, Nixon opened relations with China in 1972. This triangular diplomacy, alongside detente with the USSR, reshaped the Cold War in the 1970s.
In Southeast Asia, communists took power in Laos and Cambodia in 1975, as the domino theory predicted. But the dominoes stopped there: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines remained non-communist, helped by ASEAN and their own growth.
