The tourism system

G3 Full Geography - syllabus K329, 2027

What this lesson teaches

  • I can describe the parts of a tourism system and explain how they affect each other and the wider environment.

Syllabus K329, Topic 2.1, Key Question 1. What is a tourism system?

Make a guess

A Singaporean flies from Changi to Tokyo for a holiday, changing planes in Taipei. Which place is the generating region?

  1. Singapore, where the trip starts.
  2. None, because the trip crosses a border.
  3. Taipei, because the plane is changed there.
  4. Tokyo, because it generates the holiday experiences.
Show the answer

Singapore, where the trip starts.

The generating region is where the tourist comes from. Tokyo is the destination and Taipei is a transit point on the route.

A tourism system links where a trip starts, the route taken and the destination, plus all the services along the way.

A tourist stays at least one night away from their usual surroundings, for less than a year. The trip may be for leisure, business or visiting family. A day visitor does not stay overnight. Domestic tourism stays inside one country. International tourism crosses a border.

Every trip has three parts. The generating region is where it starts. The destination region is the main place visited. Transit routes connect them by road, rail, air or sea. Routes affect which way people travel and how many go.

The same city can play different roles. It can send tourists, receive them or be a stop on the way.

Tourists, businesses and organisations in each region depend on each other. This is interdependence. A travel agent needs airlines and hotels. Hotels need visitors and suppliers. A new direct route can bring more visitors to one place and fewer to another.

Generating region
Where the trip starts.
Transit route
The road, rail, air or sea link between places.
Destination region
The main place visited.

Real examples to use

International tourism, 2024 (UN Tourism)

About 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded in 2024, about 99% of the 2019 level, after the collapse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Every one of those trips links a generating region, a transit route and a destination.

Worked example: One city, several roles

A trip goes from Town A through Hub B to Island C. A is the generating region, B is a transit stop and C is the destination. If someone from C visits B, the roles change.

    Watch out for this

A place is either a destination or a generating region, never both.

Residents leave while visitors arrive. A place's role depends on the trip.

    Check your understanding

A traveller changes trains in Town B on the way from A to a holiday in C. What is B's role?

    1. A transit point on the route.
    2. The destination.
    3. The generating region, because it has a station.
    Show the answer

A transit point on the route.

Yes. It connects the start and the destination.
