Economic resilience and skills

G3 Full Geography - syllabus K329, 2027

What this lesson teaches

  • I can judge how well Singapore's efforts keep its economy, society and environment sustainable.

Syllabus K329, Topic 5.3, Key Question 3. What are Singapore's efforts in sustainable development?

Make a guess

A firm has three suppliers, but all of them ship through the same risky sea route. Is it well protected?

  1. No. One disruption could cut all three.
  2. Yes, because sea routes are never disrupted.
  3. No, because firms should only use one supplier.
  4. Yes, because three suppliers is more than one.
Show the answer

No. One disruption could cut all three.

Backup options only help if they are real alternatives. Suppliers sharing one route can all be stopped by the same event.

Businesses and workers need backup options, useful skills and the ability to keep improving how they work.

Having more overseas markets, suppliers and partners gives firms options when things go wrong. But check they really are alternatives. Several suppliers using one risky shipping route offer little extra protection.

Innovation means improving products, processes or services. It helps firms meet new needs or save resources. It needs people, money and testing. Some ideas fail, so learning from them matters.

Deep skills help workers solve problems and use technology. SkillsFuture supports lifelong learning through individuals, employers and training providers. Training builds resilience when people can access it and use what they learn. Time, cost and a lack of suitable jobs can limit it.

Real examples to use

SkillsFuture

Every Singaporean aged 25 and above receives credit for approved courses, so workers can keep their skills up to date as jobs change.

Jurong Island

Built by joining seven small islands, Jurong Island hosts global energy and chemical companies, linking Singapore to world supply chains.

Port of Singapore (MPA)

In 2024 the port handled a record 41.12 million containers, measured in twenty-foot units (TEUs). About 90% were transhipped to other places, making Singapore the world's largest transhipment hub. This links the economy to world trade, and to its disruptions.

Worked example: Attendance or ability?

Staff at a logistics firm learn a new stock system. Attendance shows they took part. The real test is whether they can now fix stock problems and keep deliveries on time.

    Watch out for this

More courses always mean a stronger economy.

Skills must be relevant and used. Access, quality and job opportunities matter.

    Check your understanding

What is the best evidence that a skills programme builds resilience?

    1. An assumption that technology makes skills unnecessary.
    2. The number of people who signed up for the programme.
    3. Workers use new skills to adapt when demand changes.
    Show the answer

Workers use new skills to adapt when demand changes.

Yes. Applied skills show real capability.
