What this lesson teaches
I can describe Singapore's economy, its people and how it is governed.
Syllabus K329, Topic 5.1, Key Question 2. What are the human characteristics of Singapore?
Make a guess
Singapore is a small state with no large army to rely on. How does it protect its interests abroad?
- By working through agreed rules and groups.
- By relying on its own size and strength.
- By letting other countries decide for it.
- By staying out of international groups.
Show the answer
By working through agreed rules and groups.
A small state depends on shared rules on trade, the sea and borders. Groups such as the UN and the Forum of Small States let it speak with others.
Singapore is an independent city-state with a varied economy, and its global links bring both opportunities and risks.
A city-state is an independent country centred on one city. As a sovereign state, Singapore makes its own choices about land, roads, housing and dealings with other countries.
Its economy has factories that make goods. It also has services, such as transport, banking and tourism. Having many kinds of work is called diversification. It spreads some risks. But a world trade or money crisis can still hit many kinds of work at once.
Singapore is crowded and open to the world. Goods, people, money and ideas flow in and out. This shapes daily life and brings jobs and new ideas. Singapore joined the United Nations in 1965. It works with other countries on climate change and sustainable growth.
A small state cannot protect itself by size or strength alone. It depends on rules that all countries agree to follow, such as rules on trade, the sea and borders. So Singapore works through international groups. Some problems also cross borders and cannot be solved by one country. Haze from fires in a neighbouring country and global warming are two examples. Agreements let countries share information, set targets and hold each other to them. But an agreement works only if each member acts on it at home.
- City-state
- An independent country centred on one city.
- Economy
- Manufacturing plus services like finance and transport.
- 1965
- Singapore joins the United Nations.
- Forum of Small States

Step by step
Economy
Many sectors give varied jobs and income.
Society
A dense, connected population needs good services.
Statehood
Sovereignty lets Singapore decide and cooperate globally.
Real examples to use
Forum of Small States, 1992
Singapore set up this informal group at the United Nations in 1992 and has chaired it since. It is open to countries with fewer than 10 million people and now has 108 members. Small states use it to share ideas and speak together at the UN.
Law of the Sea and the Singapore Convention
Singapore's diplomat Tommy Koh chaired the UN conference that finished the Law of the Sea treaty in 1982. These rules protect free passage through straits such as the Strait of Malacca, which Singapore's port depends on. In 2019, a UN treaty on settling business disputes by mediation was signed in Singapore and named after it.
Paris Agreement pledges
Singapore ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016. In February 2025 it pledged to cut its yearly emissions to between 45 and 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2035. Its long-term goal is net zero by 2050.
ASEAN haze agreement
ASEAN members signed the Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution in 2002. After fires in Indonesia pushed Singapore's PSI to a record 401 on 21 June 2013, Singapore also passed the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act in 2014. It lets Singapore take action against companies whose fires abroad cause haze at home.
Worked example: Follow a visitor's journey
A visitor flies in and uses transport, a hotel and restaurants. Their spending supports several sectors. Border rules and air links depend on government and international agreements. One trip links economic, social and political geography.
Watch out for this
A diversified economy cannot have a broad slowdown.
Sectors may share the same overseas markets. Diversification spreads some risks but not all.
Check your understanding
Which example best shows Singapore's political characteristic?
- It takes part as a sovereign state in climate talks.
- A factory exports electronic parts to many countries.
- Many residents live close together in public housing.
Show the answer
It takes part as a sovereign state in climate talks.
Yes. This shows it acting as an independent country.
