Tourism benefits and costs

G3 Full Geography - syllabus K329, 2027

What this lesson teaches

  • I can judge the effects, challenges and opportunities of tourism for Singapore.

Syllabus K329, Topic 5.2, Key Question 3. How might tourism activity affect Singapore?

Make a guess

Tourism receipts in Singapore rise. Does that mean every resident earns more?

  1. No, because tourism earns Singapore little.
  2. Yes, because more visitors means more wages.
  3. Yes, because the money is shared out equally.
  4. No. Receipts show what visitors spent.
Show the answer

No. Receipts show what visitors spent.

Receipts measure total visitor spending. How that money reaches wages, and who bears crowding or costs, needs other evidence.

Tourism brings jobs, income and shared amenities to Singapore, but it also uses resources and can put pressure on residents.

Visitors spend on hotels, food, transport, shopping and attractions. This supports businesses, suppliers and jobs. Arrivals count visits. Tourism receipts measure spending. More arrivals do not always mean more wages.

Tourism can support cultural exchange, heritage and amenities that residents also enjoy. But busy sites can become crowded, and neighbourhoods can change. A shop owner and a nearby resident may see the same development very differently.

Hotels, transport and attractions use land, energy and water, and create waste and emissions. Tourism can also pay for the care of nature and heritage sites. The balance depends on planning, business practices, enforcement and visitor behaviour. So judge the effects, not just the amount of tourism.

Arrivals
Count visits, not spending.
Receipts
Measure visitor spending.
Three effects
Economic, social and environmental.

Step by step

Economic effects

Spending supports businesses, suppliers and jobs.

Social effects

Heritage and amenities, or crowding and conflict.

Environmental effects

Resource use and waste, or conservation funding.

Real examples to use

Visitors and spending in 2024 (STB)

Singapore had 16.5 million visitor arrivals in 2024, 21% more than in 2023 but still below the 19.1 million of 2019. Tourism receipts reached a record S$29.8 billion. So spending recovered faster than visitor numbers.

Changi Airport

In 2025 Skytrax named Changi the World's Best Airport for the 13th time. Good air links bring in visitors, but also connect Singapore to shocks such as pandemics.

Worked example: Read the period correctly

STB reported S$23.9 billion in tourism receipts for January to September 2025. This shows spending over those nine months. It is not a full-year total or a count of tourists. It does not show every household benefited equally.

    Watch out for this

Tourism receipts show what every resident earned.

Receipts measure visitor spending. How it reaches workers and families needs more evidence.

    Check your understanding

What does the January-September 2025 receipts figure show?

    1. How much visitors spent during those nine months.
    2. That residents benefited about equally from the spending.
    3. The exact number of visitors in the whole year.
    Show the answer

How much visitors spent during those nine months.

Yes. It measures spending in a stated period.
