Make a guess

Japan defeated the Dutch in Indonesia in 1942 and ruled harshly until 1945. How do you think this helped the independence movement?

  1. Japan granted Indonesia full and secure independence in 1942 after the Dutch surrendered.
  2. It did not help, because Japan crushed the nationalist groups.
  3. It showed Dutch rule could be beaten, and gave some Indonesians organising skills.
Show the answer

It showed Dutch rule could be beaten, and gave some Indonesians organising skills.

Leaders gained platforms and some people got military or office training. These stayed after Japan surrendered.

Japan's defeat of the Dutch in 1942 showed colonial rule could be beaten, and gave some Indonesians skills to organise later.

Indonesia is an archipelago, a large group of islands that includes Java and Sumatra. Before the war, the Netherlands ruled it. In 1942, Japan defeated the Dutch. This showed that the colonial power could be beaten.

Japanese rule was harsh. It used forced labour and seized food and supplies. It did not give Indonesians real freedom. But some leaders could speak to large crowds. Others learnt to run offices or had military training.

Nationalists, people who wanted their nation to rule itself, used these chances for their own aims. When Japan surrendered in 1945, these skills and contacts stayed. They made it harder for the Dutch to take back control.

Worked example: Skills used for a new purpose

Someone learns to organise supplies and pass orders during wartime training.

  1. Japan trains them to support its own war.
  2. After Japan surrenders, the person still has those skills.
  3. They can now use them to organise for Indonesian independence.

Watch out for this

Japan gave Indonesia a secure independence.

Japan used Indonesians for its war and ruled harshly. Independence still had to be won against the Dutch after 1945.

Check your understanding
