What this lesson teaches
I can explain how transport, digital technology and multinational corporations work together to drive globalisation.
Syllabus K230, Issue 3, Guiding Question 1. Driving forces of globalisation
Make a guess
You order a phone online that was assembled in another country. Which drivers of globalisation do you think made this possible?
- Mainly transport, because the phone came by ship and then by van.
- Mainly digital technology, because you placed the order online.
- Digital technology, transport and an MNC working together.
Show the answer
Digital technology, transport and an MNC working together.
The website and tracking are digital, containers carry the phone, and an MNC organises making it across countries.
Transport moves goods and people, digital technology moves information, and MNCs organise it all. Together they drive globalisation.
An overseas factory needs more than a video call. It needs investment, materials, trained staff and a way to reach customers. Digital technology helps coordinate this work, while transport links the physical places.
The drivers strengthen one another. Better transport and communication make it easier to run operations abroad. As MNCs grow, they create even more flows of money, goods, people and knowledge, through their own operations and their suppliers. A supply chain is the network of people and businesses that makes a product and delivers it to customers.
To explain a driver, link a specific change to a cross-border activity it made easier. More jobs or higher sales are impacts. Naming them does not explain how the connection was created.
Which driver matters most depends on the activity. An online service mainly needs digital technology. A shipment of fresh food mainly needs fast transport.
- Three drivers
- Transport, digital technology, MNCs.
- Supply chain
- The network of businesses that makes and delivers a product.
- Answer tip
- Link a specific change to an easier cross-border activity.
Real examples to use
Buying a phone online
A phone assembled in one country is ordered on a website, tracked through apps and shipped in containers. Digital technology, transport and MNCs all work together.
Worked example: A furniture order
A furniture company has a design office in Singapore and a factory in Vietnam. They use a shared online ordering system, and a regular shipping route delivers the furniture to a retailer in Australia.
- The MNC organises design and production across two countries.
- Digital technology coordinates orders.
- Transport delivers the finished furniture; faster messages cannot replace the ship. Explaining how each link works is stronger than simply listing the three drivers.
Watch out for this
One driver explains every global connection.
Most global activities depend on several drivers working together. Work out what the activity needs: a physical product needs information, production and delivery, while an online service relies mainly on digital links.
Check your understanding
Which driver matters most for delivering fresh fish from Norway to Singapore?
- Video calls to agree each order.
- An MNC that owns the fishing boats.
- Fast, refrigerated air transport links.
Show the answer
Fast, refrigerated air transport links.
Yes. Fresh goods depend most on speed and refrigeration.
