G2 Full Geography - syllabus K226, 2027

What this lesson teaches

  • I can explain how motivation, ability and mobility have made tourism grow.

Syllabus K226, Topic 2.1, Key Question 2. What led to the growth of tourism?

Make a guess

A young worker badly wants to see Europe and has saved enough money. Why might they still not go?

  1. They cannot get enough time off work.
  2. Online booking makes long trips harder.
  3. Saving money removes the barriers to travel.
  4. Wanting to travel enough means you will go.
Show the answer

They cannot get enough time off work.

Motivation and money are not enough on their own. People also need leisure time, such as paid leave, before they can travel.

Motivation is the reason to travel; money, time and affordable services make the trip possible.

Motivation is why someone wants to travel. It might be rest, learning, a challenge or a special experience. Self-fulfilment means a sense of achievement, like learning a skill abroad.

Wanting to travel is not enough. People need money and time. Disposable income is money left after taxes. As incomes rise, more people can act on their wish to travel, once essential bills are paid.

More leisure time, including paid leave, lets people take trips. Money alone does not help someone who cannot take time off.

Business innovation lowers barriers. Online booking makes it easy to compare prices. Budget airlines and more types of accommodation can cut costs. But check the full price, because a cheap fare may not include extras.

Motivation
The reason for travelling.
Disposable income
Money left after taxes.
Paid leave
Time off that makes trips possible.

Step by step

Find the reason

Rest, self-fulfilment or a special experience.

Check money and time

Income after essentials, and time off.

Find affordable services

Cheaper transport and easy booking.

Worked example: Two barriers, two fixes

A worker wants to take a language course abroad. A cheaper flight lowers the cost barrier. Paid leave removes the time barrier. Neither alone may be enough.

    Watch out for this

More disposable income means everyone travels.

Income helps, but time, family duties, access and personal choice also matter.

    Check your understanding

A worker can afford a trip, but only goes after getting paid leave. What changed?

    1. Their ability to travel, through more leisure time.
    2. Their income after taxes, so they could pay for it.
    3. The destination's appeal, after they read reviews.
    Show the answer

Yes. Time was the missing condition.

    Check your understanding

Which change most directly increases people's ability, rather than their motivation, to travel?

    1. More paid annual leave.
    2. A desire for adventure.
    3. A wish to learn about another culture.
    Show the answer

    More paid annual leave.

Ability depends on time and money.
