What this lesson teaches
I can examine how the end of the Korean War and of the Vietnam War changed the Cold War.
Syllabus K227, The Cold War, Learning Outcomes. Examine the immediate aftermath of the Korean War and the Vietnam War on Cold War developments.
Make a guess
The Korean War shocked Western leaders. How do you think it changed US policy towards Europe and Asia?
- The USA pulled back to avoid another war like Korea.
- Containment became more military, with more bases, treaties and troops.
- It made little difference, since NATO already existed.
Show the answer
Containment became more military, with more bases, treaties and troops.
The USA signed defence treaties in Asia, sent more troops to Europe and backed West German rearmament.
The Korean War made containment more military, with more US bases and treaties in Asia and a stronger NATO in Europe.
After nearly losing the South, the USA wanted stronger defences in Asia. It signed a defence treaty with South Korea in 1953. A 1951 security treaty with Japan let US forces keep bases there. The USA also sent ships near Taiwan and gave more aid against communists in Indochina, including Vietnam. So a war over Korea widened American commitments far beyond Korea.
Western Europeans feared a similar attack in Europe. So NATO, formed in 1949, strengthened its forces, and the USA sent more troops to Europe. This is militarisation, relying more on armed forces. Korea also boosted support for West Germany to rearm. West Germany joined NATO in 1955, and the Warsaw Pact followed.
These changes came after the invasion. They did not cause it.
- 1951
- US-Japan security treaty; US bases stay in Japan.
- 1953
- US-South Korea defence treaty.
- Militarisation
- Relying more on armed forces and alliances.
Worked example: An Asian war changes European defence
Trace the link instead of saying the Cold War just spread.
- The invasion shows communist-backed states might attack by force.
- Western Europeans fear the same could happen to them.
- So NATO builds up its forces and the USA sends more troops to Europe.
Watch out for this
The Korean War created NATO and the Warsaw Pact, which then fought in Korea.
NATO already existed from 1949, and the Warsaw Pact formed in 1955. Neither fought as an alliance in Korea.
